What is the Government Hearing Aid Subsidy?

The Government Hearing Aid Subsidy helps eligible adults reduce the cost of hearing aids.

If you need hearing aids for both ears, the subsidy can provide up to $1,022.22 towards a pair of hearing aids.

This subsidy is available for first-time purchases of hearing aids, or replacement aids every six years.

Who can get the hearing aid subsidy?

You may be eligible for the Government Hearing Aid Subsidy if you:

  • Are over 16 years old
  • Have permanent hearing loss
  • Need a hearing aid
  • Are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident living in New Zealand
  • Are not receiving hearing aid support through another funding scheme

Your Dilworth Hearing audiologist can assess your hearing and help explain whether the subsidy may apply.

How much will I need to pay?

The subsidy helps reduce the cost of hearing aids, but it may not cover the full cost of your hearing solution.
The cost of your solution will depend on:

  • Whether you need one hearing aid or two
  • The hearing aids you choose
  • Your hearing needs
  • Your lifestyle needs
  • Whether you qualify for another funding pathway
  • Any assessment, fitting, or service fees that apply

Your audiologist will explain your options before you decide.

Three simple steps to
using your subsidy

1

Book your hearing assessment

Your audiologist will assess your hearing and talk with you about where you need support, such as conversations, work, family life, or noisy environments.

2

Confirm your funding options

If hearing aids are recommended, your audiologist will explain whether the Government Hearing Aid Subsidy applies and whether any other funding options may be available.

3

Choose your hearing aids

You will receive advice on hearing aid options that suit your hearing needs, lifestyle, and budget.
If the subsidy applies, it can be used towards the cost of your hearing aids.
