HEARING TESTS
LET US HELP YOU TO HEAR BETTER.
Dilworth Hearing offers hearing assessments New Zealand wide for adults and children for all ages. Seeing an audiologist for the first time can sometimes be a daunting prospect for people with hearing loss, but we are here to help.
Our team is here to help.
When you get your hearing tested at a local Dilworth Hearing clinic, our team will make you feel at ease, explaining the test process and outcome of the hearing test so you clearly understand your current hearing levels. Below, you will find some information on some of our main audiology appointments, so you know what to expect during your hearing test.
We offer free hearing tests to those with an AA membership or GP voucher to help determine whether you are experiencing hearing loss and to help you reconnect to the world around you. If you are suffering from hearing loss, you can book an appointment in one of our local clinics to meet one of our clinicians.
What are the hearing tests?
Hearing Screening
A hearing screening is a quick and simple test designed to identify people who may have hearing difficulties or a potential hearing loss. Although this lets you know if a hearing loss is present or not, it does not indicate the nature of the loss or how this might be impacting your listening needs. Therefore, it is used as an initial assessment to determine whether further evaluation by a clinician is required.

Full Diagnostic Hearing Assessment
A full diagnostic hearing assessment is a thorough examination carried out by an audiologist to assess overall hearing ability, type of hearing loss and identify any underlying hearing problems. This information is critical in determining if medical intervention is possible or if hearing aids may help.
During a full diagnostic hearing assessment, a variety of tests may be carried out, depending on the age of the person and the context:
- Pure-tone audiometry: Evaluates the ability to hear tones at different frequencies.
- Speech audiometry: Assesses the ability to understand speech in different listening environments.
- Tympanometry: Tests the health and function of the eardrum and middle ear.
Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs): Measures the response of the inner ear to sound.
These tests measure different aspects of auditory function, including the ability to hear different frequencies, to understand speech in different sound environments and to assess the health and function of the middle ear and inner ear structures.
The results of the full diagnostic hearing assessment provide valuable insights into the individual’s hearing health, enabling the audiologist to make accurate diagnoses, develop tailored treatment plans, and provide recommendations for hearing aids, assistive listening devices, communication strategies, or other interventions as needed.
